Synopsis: The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition) contains many significant differences from previous editions, including new diagnoses, changes to existing diagnoses, and a new classification system. In this course, participants will learn about the changed structure of the new manual, changes within the chapters, changes to familiar diagnoses, and new diagnoses, as well as the new Cultural Formulation Interview.

Instructor Profile:

The course is taught by Rachel Michaelsen, LCSW, one of the APA’s Collaborating Investigators for the DSM-5 and a participant in development of the upcoming International Classifcation of Diseases, Version 11 as a member of the World Health Organization’s Global Clinical Practice Network. She has more than 20 years of experience in the mental-health feld including in HMOs, public agencies, and private practice, as well as providing clinical supervision and consultation. She has taught DSM-5 courses throughout the United States, was the Lead Curriculum Developer on the DSM-5 for the California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions, and was the closing plenary speaker at a major social-work conference (900+ participants) focused on the DSM-5. She also teaches courses in supervision, law and ethics, childhood psychopathology, and vicarious traumatization at universities, conferences, and mental- health agencies. In her private practice in Oakland, California she provides clinical supervision, and works with adults and couples.
